Selection Process

Stage 1 - Application

The application form is designed to help you assess your own readiness for HPDS, and to assist your force in making the decision about whether to support your application. Please note that the 2009 application window is now closed and no further applications will be accepted. Details of the 2010 application process will be published on this page in due course.

To be successful at this stage your force must support your application to become a member of the scheme. Note that your force may choose to adopt a further selection stage in order to choose which applications to support. You may therefore have to complete your application form well in advance of the application deadline. If successful at this stage, you will be invited to attend Stage 2 which involves a series of ability tests.

To help support potential applicants we will be providing the opportunity to practice a similar and comparable set of numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning tests to those which will be used as part of Stage 2 of the HPDS Selection Process.

If you are considering applying for the HPDS Selection Process, you will benefit from completing these on-line ability tests. Completing these tests may help you to decide whether or not you wish to apply for the HPDS. You will be provided with written feedback on your performance.

Stage 2 - Ability Tests

At Stage 2 you will be asked to complete a series of ability tests, including tests of your verbal, numerical and non-verbal ability, and a test of your judgement and decision making in a range of managerial scenarios. Those reaching the required standards will be deemed successful at Stage 2, and will progress to Stage 3, the Assessment Centre.

All Stage 2 information for candidates will be available on the NPIA website at the close of Stage 1.

Stage 3 - Assessment Centre

At Stage 3 you will attend a three-day assessment centre and complete five exercises. This will include a written exercise, an interactive exercise, a group exercise, an oral briefing exercise and a competency-based interview. Your performance on each of the exercises will be considered and assessed against a required standard. At the end of Stage 3, we aim to select a maximum of 60 candidates who will be offered a place on the 2009 High Potential Development Scheme.
