Cameroon

27 June 2008

As part of our work in Cameroon, a Train the Trainers programme was run in March.

Tim Maycock, a retired Hampshire Sergeant and Ian Olliver, a Sergeant from Avon and Somerset, travelled to Yaounde to deliver a Train the Trainer Programme.

"Ian and I arrived in the capital on a Saturday evening, where we were escorted to a hotel by friendly, local staff from the British High Commission, who were funding the programme.  On Sunday we recovered from the journey and prepared course material before we took our place in the classroom.

We introduced new concepts, enlisting the participation of the delegates, thereby inviting them to share their experiences. This was a new experience for the majority of the group, which they began with trepidation, and finished with rapture!

Two lightning-paced weeks later, our class was transformed from largely reluctant attendees into gregarious, confident participants.  Despite language and cultural barriers, considerable development was evident, and we were proud to present NPIA certificates of attendance to all delegates.

Ian and I headed back to London, secure in the knowledge that not only had we enhanced the skills of our Cameroon counterparts, but also that we had made several new friends for the NPIA and British Police Service!"
