Simon Stevenson, ICP Director writes about his Singapore visit in May.

In the final week of May, Alistair Cumming, International Policing Adviser and I flew to Singapore.  We were to meet representatives of the Home Team Academy.  I also had another objective, which was to meet up with three previous students of the International Commanders' Programme.

The Home Team Academy is a relatively new institution, but its vision is ambitious.  It seeks to bring together a number of highly effective protective service institutions,  into one place for training.  It is not intended to replace individual training institutions, but to promote a common understanding, and a shared approach to problem solving.

We were very excited by what we saw and left with an agreement to support the Home Team Academy's Critical Incident Management Courses with Hydra-Minerva and a commitment to partner them with the development of a regional management programme.

Throughout our time in Singapore, the hospitality was tremendous, but no more so than when Alistair and I met with the three past International Commanders' Programme students; Ray Yeo, Wee Teck Hoong and Tan Tin Wee.  Together we had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the harbour and talked about old times.  Amongst other things we discussed the forthcoming Formula1 night race to be held in Singapore, for which the preparations were readily apparent.

Singapore is a vibrant and exciting place and we learnt a lot about the local culture just by watching.  However, in one respect you can't just watch - you have to do, and every mealtime we practiced eating tidily with chopsticks.  I can't help thinking though that I need more development in this area.  Perhaps another trip is required so that I can really get the hang of it........
