Footwear Marks Coding & Intelligence Course - Module 1

Who Should Attend?


The Footwear Marks Coding and Intelligence Course is the first module of the foundation stage of the National Footwear Specialist Learning Programme.  It is aimed at those undertaking the role of a Footwear Marks Coding Officer, or those who handle footwear marks evidence as part of their present role.

Course / Module duration

1 week full time residential

Methods of delivery

Classroom based learning which includes group work and practical demonstrations.  Students will also be required to maintain a student workbook throughout the course.

Assessment process / accreditation details

Students must undertake practical assessments and a written examination to assess underpinning knowledge.

Additional Information

On successful completion of module 1 the student will then move to module 2 of the programme - the Coding and Intelligence Evidential Portfolio.  This portfolio has been developed to complement the core knowledge and understanding, skills and attitude gained from module 1.

On completion of modules 1 and 2 students will be qualified to carry out the role of a Footwear Coding Officer.

Overview


This course provides an understanding of the practical application of pattern coding and initial assessments supported by an appreciation of the law governing footwear marks. The content also includes how marks are left, recovery techniques employed by Crime Scene Investigators and general forensic awareness.

Aims


The aim of this module is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to conduct initial assessments and coding of footwear marks.

Objectives


The student will demonstrate competence in the following areas:

  • How footwear marks are formed at a crime scene
  • Forensic awareness
  • The correct handling procedure of footwear marks evidence
  • The National Intelligence Model, PACE, disclosure and elimination
  • Initial assessment of footwear marks (pattern only)
  • The coding process
  • Introduction to the National Footwear Reference Collection
