NPIA shows excellence in Information Technology

05 December 2008

Richard Earland

The Chief Information Officer in the NPIA was awarded the accolade IT Leader of the Year at last night's British Computer Society awards ceremony.

Richard Earland was recognised for his outstanding work in his role in bringing cutting edge technology to the police service.

Richard's work, such as completion of the roll-out of the first national police radio system Airwave, and supporting forces in their delivery of handheld computers to officers across the country has been vital in improving the ability of the police service to access, manage and share information.

This helps to cut bureaucracy, prevent and detect crime, and make communities safer.

NPIA Chief information officer, Richard Earland said:

"I am very pleased to accept this award.  I see it as a recognition of the great work which a huge number of people across the NPIA and the police service have done and are doing.  I am very grateful for the support and engagement of police forces for the work which we are doing in the NPIA to transform information systems in the service.  I am passionate about policing and the huge difference technology can make to front line policing and the public.  Improving the ability of the police service to manage and share information helps prevent and detect crime and make communities safer.

"My role as part of the NPIA is to take what we have, learn from what exists and is done well by forces, and help to support others in the police service to replicate this good work."

About NPIA
NPIA is a single national organisation created to support effective policing. It provides expertise in areas as diverse as information and communications technology, support to information and intelligence sharing, core police processes, managing change and recruiting, developing and deploying people.

The organisation's creation in April 2007 streamlined and simplified the way that policing improvement is delivered locally and nationally.  NPIA works for the police service and is governed by a tripartite board comprising ACPO, APA, Home Office and independent members.  The ACPO President is a member of the NPIA Board.
