Who Should Attend?


Detective Superintendents, Detective Chief Inspectors and other officers who are likely to be appointed by ACPO/ACPOS as a SIO to investigate such offences. This course would also be of benefit to ACPO/ ACPOS officers responsible for such investigations.

Learners should be within the scope of the SIO Development Programme or ACPO/ACPOS officers with responsibility for the supervision of such investigations.

Overview


This course gives learners the opportunity to consider the application of existing skills and knowledge in the investigation of offences of kidnap and extortion, supported by subject specialists and peer investigators.

Aims


To equip students with the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of a Senior Investigating Officer when investigating offences of kidnap and extortion.

Objectives


  • Apply the investigative principles contained in the ACPO Kidnap Manual/ACPOS Abduction and Extortion Manual
  • State the limitations, considerations and objectives in setting SIO strategy, policy and tactics
  • List the offences to which the term 'crime in action' relates
  • List the force resources and external agencies available to support a covert investigation
  • Describe the role and capabilities of the NCS/SDEA in the investigation of kidnap and extortion offences
  • Explain the role of Crisis Management Teams in investigations involving commerce.
