Overview


The module is an introduction to the theory and practice of analysis in law enforcement.

Aims


To enable the student to provide analytical support to law enforcement activity with the aim of preventing, reducing and detecting crime - using standard, nationally defined analytical processes, tools and techniques.

Objectives


On completion of the module students will be able to:

  • Explain the key roles and responsibilities of Law Enforcement Analysts.
  • Use effective communication skills to negotiate a Terms of Reference for an Intelligence Analysis Product.
  • Collect and evaluate the information required to produce a defined analytical product.
  • Explain the 10 analytical techniques used by analysts working in UK Law Enforcement. 
  • Develop inferences from collated information, identify intelligence gaps and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Identify the key components and content of a written intelligence analysis product.
  • Disseminate the findings from the intelligence analysis to an identified customer.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of their analysis against the Terms of Reference.
  • Identify the practical implications that legislation and guidance has on the work of analysts.
  • Contribute to meetings and develop effective working relationships.
