Airwave Force Operational Tactical Advisors Course

Who Should Attend?


The course is aimed at Control Room Supervisors or Operational / Event planners, but is not restricted to people in these roles. Forces who have staff they wish to perform this role are invited to send them.

Course / Module entry requirements


There are no specific requirements, but delegates should already have some knowledge of their own Airwave setup including, types of handheld and vehicle terminals used, Force Control Room configuration and equipment used. (ICCS manufacturer)

Course / Module duration

Four (4) days: Classroom based, followed by one (1) update day every six (6) months. (Minimum attendance of one per twelve month period)

Methods of delivery

Classroom based delivery supported by delegate notes and delegate participation in problem solving scenarios.

Assessment process / accreditation details

Continuous assessment with knowledge check and individual competency scenario test on the final day which will be recorded for accuracy of assessment. Delegates are required to show continuous professional development following the course or be subject to reassessment after twelve months.

Certification

In order to successfully complete the course a delegate must undertake the classroom phase, and be considered capable of giving advice at the stage of forward planning only, or fully at the time of an ongoing incident. Later update days will take into account evidence of professional development, and will allow for retesting and further certification of delegates where appropriate.

Additional Information

Courses are held only at NPIA sites. They are not designed to be force specific. No more than three (3) delegates per force / organisation should be nominated to attend any one particular course.

Overview


The course develops delegates to the point where they have the confidence to provide advice, at the time of planning evants or during incidents, regarding Airwave use and consideration of national recommendations.

Aims


To equip individuals with the knowledge to provide reliable and consistent advice regarding the use of Airwave at the time of planning events, and when there are communication issues during ongoing incidents.

Objectives


At the end of the course delegates will be able to;

  • Give advice relating to the use of Airwave (including its limitations) in police operational / event planning. The advice will cover areas including capacity, coverage, solutions aavailable and talk group management.
  • Display an understanding of interoperability with other Airwave users including the Emergency Services and all sharers.
  • Offer operational advice in relation to Airwave use with options to Incident Command when communication problems arise.
  • Assist force Airwave teams and operational Command in setting operating rules and working practices for Airwave use in force.
  • Assist in reviewing current force major incident and contingency plans involving Airwave communications.
  • Access national Airwave advice and guidance, and contact other national Airwave tactical advisors.
  • Record all advice given and actions taken in an appropriate manner.
