Police Recruitment

Police SEARCH® Recruit Assessment Centre is a rigorous process involving observation of performance across a variety of exercises, assessing candidates' potential to perform the role effectively.

Candidates wishing to join the Police Service of England and Wales as a police constable must be successful in a number of recruitment stages, one of these is the Police SEARCH® Recruit Assessment Centre.

Assessors evaluate candidate's performance in exercises related to core competencies. Information from all of the exercises are used to produce the final results.

Assessment exercises include:

  • A competency-based interview with 4 questions lasting 20 minutes in total
  • A numerical reasoning test lasting 12 minutes
  • A verbal logical reasoning test lasting 25 minutes
  • Two written exercises lasting 20 minutes each
  • Four interactive exercises lasting 5 minutes each.
  • All candidates undertake the same exercises and are assessed on an equal basis. The assessment centre lasts approximately half a day.

The following documents are important pre-read materials for assessment centres.  Make sure you take the time to read and understand them:

We are currently designing the exercises for next year's Police SEARCH® Recruit Assessment Centre and are keen to find out more about the policing issues which affect you. Follow the links below to take the questionnaire.

Candidate Guidance

All relevant information will be sent to you at least two weeks prior to the date of  the Assessment Centre. Details include how the assessment is structured and background material relating to the exercises.

You can download an example of an interactive exercise and the Integrated Competency Framework that gives details of the competencies to be assessed:

You will receive written feedback on your results by competency and exercise, indicating how well you have performed compared to other candidates.

Candidates wishing to query their results or the marking of the Assessment Centre should contact the force recruitment representative. We do not handle appeals/enquiries directly from candidates.

Help with Disabilities

If you believe that you have a disability which could disadvantage your performance, you may be eligible for assistance via our 'reasonable adjustment' policy. Please inform the force to which you are applying as early as possible if you would like to be considered for reasonable adjustment.

If you have a disability such as dyslexia, the force will ask you to submit a specialist's report outlining the nature of your disability and any recommendations for reasonable adjustments. We will use this report to make a decision about whether you are eligible for adjustments during the assessment. Download Reasonable Adjustment Policy .

Receive a £10 Argos voucher for participation in initial Police Constable recruitment competency based question pilot survey

Within the NPIA we are currently in the process of reviewing the initial sift process for the recruitment of Police Constables throughout England and Wales.  The primary aim of this is to review and refresh the questions used within the competency assessment element of this initial application process.

As part of the ongoing development of these new questions I am seeking your assistance to take part in a pilot stage. Taking part in the pilot stage would involve completing an online survey and providing a response based on your past experiences to each the four new questions being developed.

In return for taking part in this pilot stage and providing a response to each of the four questions NPIA is offering a £10 Argos voucher.

If you are available to assist with this pilot the survey can be accessed by clicking here: CBQ Questions Pilot Survey
