Course / Module duration

2 weeks vocational skills development course, followed by workplace based vocational development.

Assessment process / accreditation details

Formative feedback given by operational facilitators from UK police forces.

Summative assessment is provided in the workplace using the National Occupational Standards, reflective feedback and production of a critical case review.

Overview


This course is for experienced Crime Scene Investigators who have recently obtained a supervisory position. It provides participants with an awareness of the many issues a Crime Scene Manager needs to consider and develops their management skills. This course presents the student with two options:

  • Attainment of a Certificate in Crime Scene Management via the National Occupational Standards.
  • Attainment of above certificate and progression to the Certificate in Management via the Core Leadership Development Programme. This registration can be facilitated via the NTC.

Aims


To develop the scene management skills of experienced Crime Scene Investigators in order to undertake the role of Crime Scene Manager at a major incident scene. This work will be facilitated through a programme of work-based assessment and external verification of skills and knowledge linked to the Skills for Justice National Occupational Standards and the Core Leadership Development Programme.

Objectives


Learning Outcomes (Vocational Skills Course) On successful completion of the two-week vocational course the participants will be introduced to and given an assessment of the following incident management issues: 

  • Management of all aspects of a major incident scene in respect to controlling the scene, formulating and reviewing clearly defined action plans, communicating with colleagues and making decisions under varying circumstances
  • Assessment of resource requirements and prioritisation procedures
  • Liaison with Scientific Support Co-ordinator, SIO, specialists and staff
  • Health & safety, and welfare
  • Support of staff at scenes and their requirements
  • Provision of a focal point for the management of the scene
  • Recording evidence recovery plans and fully documenting actions at the scene
  • Addressing all contamination and disclosure issues.

Learning Outcomes (CSM Development Programme)
On successful completion of the course the student will return to Force where they will follow a programme of workplace based assessment in line with the parent organisation policies and the Skills for Justice National Occupational Standards. In addition the student registered on the CLDP will complete the following developmental stages:

  • Complete the developmental action plans and guidance
  • Undertake the Certificate in Management Skills via the CLDP
  • Complete the National Occupational Standards
