Who Should Attend?


Newly appointed bureau staff.

Course / Module entry requirements


Students are required to complete pre-course learning prior to attending the Foundation course.  The information is contained in the National Fingerprint Training Manual and covers the following:

  • Section 2 - Structure of Scientific Support
  • Section 3 - Fingerprint History

These subjects will not now be covered in depth during the course however any student queries regarding these subjects will be answered. The subjects will remain part of the final theoretical assessment

Overview


The course provides an understanding of the practical application of pattern definition, pattern coding and the identification process.  The theory behind the applications including digit determination, palms and development of friction ridge skin is also covered.  This is underpinned by the law governing fingerprints and stated cases relating to fingerprints.

The course incorporates IDENT1 training, enabling the student to access and correctly operate the system functionality for both crime scene marks and Tenprints.

 

Aims


To provide training and understanding in the core knowledge and practical competences required in a fingerprint bureau.

Objectives


On successful completion of the course the participants will have:

  •  An awareness of the history and development of the fingerprint system
  •  Knowledge of the role of the Fingerprint Bureau and of the fingerprint examiner
  •  Understand the development of  friction ridge skin.
  •  The ability to recognise fingerprint patterns and their use in the holistic Identification process of finger and palmar impressions
  •  Understand and demonstrate the correct application of ACE-V methodology through practical coursework and assessments including Ident 1
  •  The ability to take and record fingerprints 
  •  An awareness of health and safety issues relevant to taking fingerprints
  •  An understanding of the law concerning fingerprints, and stated cases
