Accelerated DNA Profiling Technology (ADAPT)

The NPIA has set up the Accelerated DNA Profiling Technology (ADAPT) project within the Forensics21 Programme to:

  • Examine the relevant technical, procurement and quality standards that need to be in place
  • Provide a degree of business change support to potential suppliers to ensure products are aligned to policing requirements
  • Facilitate a series of pilot studies to enable 'proof of concept' and further inform development.

Following a series of workshops and consultation with forces, other partner agencies and stakeholders, a high-level Statement of Requirements (SoR) Matrix for ADAPT has been developed.

The NPIA recognise that there are numerous possible applications for such a concept. As such, the ADAPT SoR is broken down into sections, one detailing the requirements that are common across all applications and sections detailing specific requirements.

On 17 November 2009, the NPIA hosted an Innovation Cloud Supplier Conference designed to gauge the appetite organisations have for developing and piloting such a technology, to share its findings with the scientific community and to engage potential suppliers. Presentations from the conference are available to download in the right hand column.

Following the conference, we invited potential suppliers of ADAPT solutions to submit a Roadmap for each product or service.  As of 1 January 2010, we had received 5 ADAPT Roadmaps and 2 registrations of interest.

If your organisation has developed an ADAPT product or service please let the NPIA know by submitting a Roadmap via email to the ADAPT project team at: ADAPT@npia.pnn.police.uk

Information on the format and content required can be found in the ADAPT FAQ.  ALL ADAPT Roadmaps are reviewed and assessed against an evaluation criteria which can also be found in the download section in the right hand column.

We envisage a 6 month development stage running from January 2010 - June 2010.  During these 6 months, the NPIA are facilitating up to 5 live pilot studies, in a variety of applications.

Given that suppliers of ADAPT solutions are at different points in their product or service development lifecycles, the NPIA is taking a flexible approach to the development of ADAPT and welcomes approaches from suppliers outside of this window.

It is anticpated that the NPIA will initiate a procurement process for the supply of ADAPT solutions in mid-late 2010, with an aim to implement ADAPT in forces from early 2011.

In support of this approach, the NPIA urges police forces and partner agencies to refrain from engaging with forensic suppliers independently of the ADAPT project as this could seriously undermine the central processes being developed and potentially damage any future procurement strategy that follows.  Restraint in these circumstances would be greatly appreciated.

We will provide updates on the progress of the ADAPT project via this webpage.
