Accelerated DNA Profiling Technology (ADAPT)

ADAPT will look at the development of solutions which will allow for a DNA profile to be generated within an hour, outside of the current DNA profiling laboratory environment.

ADAPT offers the following improvements:

  • Transform police investigations of crimes, by aiming to identify suspects within an hour
  • Reduce the time taken between the retrieval of DNA material and finding a match from an average 3 - 4 days to within an hour
  • Significantly reduce the time taken to identify linked crime scenes
  • Enhance the ability to identify people in custody and compare their DNA profiles to outstanding crimes
  • Fast identification of victims of mass casualty events, such as disasters or terrorist attacks.

A series of pilots with police forces and suppliers are being set up to identify business benefits, business change and product requirements. These pilots will inform and facilitate a procurement framework for ADAPT solutions.

This work will:

  • Identify the business and cost benefits to policing
  • Identify the business change required to the current process in order to maximise the potential of an ADAPT solution
  • Examine the relevant technical and quality standards that need to be in place
  • Ensure product specification are aligned to policing requirements
  • Aid the development of a requirement specification for procurement.

ADAPT Trials

Following a national conference held in November 2009, potential suppliers of ADAPT solutions were invited to submit development plans. These plans were evaluated against the specification criteria. Four suppliers were selected to consider participation in the ADAPT project - LGC Forensics, IntegenX, Lockheed Martin UK and the Forensic Science Service (FSS) are working with the NPIA to understand the requirements for a solution and the benefits to policing.

Pilot forces are West Midlands, West Yorkshire and Derbyshire police forces. The first trials are underway and further pilots will run between April 2010 to March 2011. It is anticipated that the NPIA will initiate a procurement process following the pilots and then intend to implement ADAPT into operation.

In support of this approach, the NPIA urges police forces and partner agencies to work with the NPIA when looking at procuring ADAPT solutions.

If your organisation has developed an ADAPT product or service please email your development plans to ADAPT@npia.pnn.police.uk
