Chemical enhancement technicians and scientific support staff involved in the enhancement of evidential material, working in specialist Fingerprint laboratories

Admission to the FLO Programme requires the individual to be employed by the Police Service or other law enforcement agency / Forensic Service Provider.

Classroom delivery and practical work in the laboratory

Assessment process / accreditation details

Continuous assessment of practical laboratory and photographic sessions. Written examinations to assess underpinning knowledge.  Practical assessent of laboratory and photographic competence.

Additional Information

Professional Development Portfolio (PDP)

Successful completion of the Foundation Skills stage of the FLO Programme is dependant on the completion of the PDP.

This requires the student to evidence their ongoing development in the application of the knowledge and competence in the workplace.

The PDP is reviewed and assessed by NPIA on completion

Overview


This course teaches the participants how to use high intensity light sources safely and effectively. The participants also work in the laboratory and carry out a range of chemical processes. This course has sessions delivered by National Fingerprint Training and Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB).

Aims


To gain practical experience in the processes contained in the HOSDB Manual of 'Fingerprint Development Techniques' and the use of high intensity light sources to enhance & recover fingerprints.

Objectives


On successful completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the Health and Safety requirements of all processes
  • Be aware of the forensic implications in respect of the material being examined
  • Develop an integrated approach and balance the three disciplines of fingerprints, photography and physical evidence recovery for forensic science examination
  • Use high intensity light sources safely and effectively
  • Photograph marks using a high intensity light source
  • Select and use chemical enhancement techniques.
