IMPACT

The IMPACT Programme is improving the ability of the police service to manage and share information to prevent and detect crime and make communities safer.

Currently, police forces are unable to directly search or access intelligence or other information that is held on another force's local system. IMPACT is an IT-enabled business change programme that aims to improve the ability of the police service to manage and share intelligence and other operational information, to prevent and detect crime and make communities safer.

The key deliverables are:

  • IMPACT Nominal Index (INI): an interim solution that identifies which force is holding information relating to an individual. Delivered 2005, replaced by Police National Database in June 2011.
  • The Management of Police Information (MoPI): introduced to ensure police information is relevant, accessible and managed in a professional way. All forces compliant December 2010.
  • The Police National Database (PND): the implementation of a single source of locally-held operational police information. Officially launched June 2011.

Background

The IMPACT Programme was established in 2005 by the Home Office as a substantial element of the government's response to Sir Michael Bichard's inquiry report on the Soham murders in 2002.
