NPIA response to "Policing in the 21st century"

26 July 2010

Responding to the publication of today's Coalition Government proposals to alter the policing landscape, NPIA Deputy Chief Executive Nick Gargan said:

"We welcome today's statement by the Home Secretary about the valuable and welcome contribution the NPIA has made in improving policing since its creation in 2007.

"The NPIA has long argued that there should be fewer national agencies as part of a less cluttered national landscape. We therefore see today's proposals as a positive opportunity to evolve what functions the NPIA provides in a way that continues to tackle crime, increase public safety and provide value for the taxpayer.

"The police service relies upon the NPIA to deliver critical national services that directly support the frontline. Our immediate priority will be to continue to provide this important infrastructure and also establish ways of helping the police service to save over £1bn by 2015.

"We look forward to the opportunity to help shape the future of the policing landscape and to advise on the best structure for national policing, building on past successes of the NPIA."
