Overview

The Leadership Academy for Policing is working with other partners in the Department for Work and Pensions, health, education, defence, local government and probation sectors, the Home Office and Cabinet Office to provide cross sector Action Learning for chief executives, senior and middle managers.

Sets of five to seven peers from a region meet for facilitated sessions six times during the year.

Aims

The primary aim of Action Learning is to find solutions to difficult problems that managers have in their work.

Objectives

The underlying philosophy and principles of the cross sector Action Learning sets are:

  • Provision of an environment in which it is safe to admit weakness/ ignorance/ mistakes and ask for help
  • Sharing of participants' experience for mutual advantage
  • An opportunity to express feelings as well as facts about the work situation
  • An antidote to isolation for highly specialised managers
  • Release (of self confidence through mutual attention and support); the reinforcement opportunity to hear and be heard
  • Broadening horizons, through sharing situations presented from other disciplines and other organisations
  • Opportunities to expand self-awareness to lose inhibitions through confidence in colleagues and to reach some of the areas of oneself that are hidden, through feedback from colleagues

This links to ICF behaviours:

  • Strategic Perspective
  • Maximising Potential
  • Team working
  • Effective Communication
