Who Should Attend?

Health and Safety is aimed at all sergeants, inspectors, first and second line managers. It may also be suitable for anyone else with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module duration

3-5 hours self-directed learning. The may be followed by a 1 day in-force Health and Safety Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Methods of delivery

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning e-Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Assessment process / accreditation details

As an awarding body of the Chartered Management Institute completion of this module can also contribute towards:

  • Level 2 - Diploma in Team Leading
  • Level 3 - Diploma in First Line Management and Leadership
  • Level 5 - Diploma in Management Leadership.

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

Health and Safety is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by managers to maintain the health and safety of the workforce.

Aims

It focuses on two areas:

  • The legal framework: why health and safety is important and the legislation which governs it
  • Health and Safety in the workplace: risk assessment and the recording and reporting of accidents.

Objectives

Health and Safety will assist learners to:

  1. Explain why it is important to manage health and safety in the police service
  2. Summarise the relevant Health and Safety legislation and detail their responsibilities under the Acts
  3. Explain how the police service and the Health and Safety Executive work together to enforce the Police (Health and Safety) Act
  4. Describe how to carry out a risk assessment
  5. Describe the recording and reporting procedures after an accident has occurred.
