Who Should Attend?

Learning and Development is aimed at all sergeants, inspectors, first and second line managers. It may also be suitable for anyone else with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module entry requirements

Completion of the CLDP Being a Leader module or similar learning is a suggested pre-requisite to undertaking this module.

This module is available in Workbook or e-Workbook and Workshop format for licensed forces. For further details please contact your force training department.

Course / Module duration

5 hours self-directed learning. The may be followed by a 2 day in-force Learning and Development Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Methods of delivery

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Assessment process / accreditation details

As an awarding body of the Chartered Management Institute completion of this module can also contribute towards:

  • Level 2 - Diploma in Team Leading
  • Level 3 - Diploma in First Line Management and Leadership
  • Level 5 - Diploma in Management and Leadership

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

This module is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by managers to integrate opportunities for learning and development into everyday work, in the interests of continuous improvement.

Aims

It focuses on two broad areas:

  • Approaches to learning and development in the context of the Police Service
  • The role of the leader in learning and development: the staff development planning cycle, coaching and mentoring, selecting opportunities, assessment and the leaders own development needs.

Objectives

Learning and Development will assist learners to:

  • Explain the factors that have influenced the development of police training
  • Describe the factors that enable adults to learn effectively
  • Explain how leaders can support the reflective practice that underpins police training
  • Detail each stage of the staff development planning cycle
  • Define coaching and mentoring and describe how they can be used for staff development
  • Explain how to select appropriate learning opportunities and resources
  • Outline a range of approaches to assessment and describe the leader's role in ensuring these are fair and effective
  • Specify personal development needs and describe how to address them.
