Who Should Attend?

Diversity and Professional Practice is aimed at all sergeants, inspectors, first and second line managers. It may also be suitable for anyone else with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module entry requirements

Completion of the CLDP Being a Leader module or similar learning is a suggested pre-requisite to undertaking this module.

This module is available in Workbook or e-Workbook and Workshop format for licensed forces. For further details please contact your force training department.

Course / Module duration

5-6 hours self-directed learning. The may be followed by a 2 day in-force Diversity and Professional Practice Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Methods of delivery

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Assessment process / accreditation details

As an awarding body of the Chartered Management Institute completion of this module can also contribute towards:

  • Level 2 - Diploma in Team Leading
  • Level 3 - Diploma in First Line Management and Leadership
  • Level 5 - Diploma in Management and Leadership.

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

Diversity and Professional Practice is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by managers to ensure that high standards of professional practice are achieved.

Aims

It focuses on five areas:

  • Diversity: discrimination and its causes and effects
  • Fairness at Work: the background, stages and appeals process
  • Grievance: the purpose of the grievance procedure and how to implement it
  • Capability and disciplinary procedures
  • Performance and Conduct Regulations 2008.

Objectives

Diversity and Professional Practice will assist learners to:

  • Define the meaning of labelling, stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination
  • Outline the causes of discrimination and describe how canteen culture affects the workplace
  • Describe the effects of discrimination and the strategies people use to minimise them
  • Identify the behaviours, skills and techniques that leaders can develop to overcome prejudice and discrimination
  • Summarise the legislation prohibiting discrimination and detail their responsibilities under the Acts
  • Explain the background, stages and appeals process for the Fairness at Work procedure
  • Explain the purpose of the grievance procedure and the role of Employment Tribunals
  • Describe the grievance procedure and methods for implementing it effectively
  • Describe the unsatisfactory performance procedure and methods for implementing it effectively
  • Describe the complaints and misconduct procedure and methods for implementing it effectively
  • Summarise the Code of Conduct
  • Describe the support staff capability procedure and methods for implementing it effectively
  • Describe the support staff disciplinary procedure and methods for implementing it effectively
  • Summarise the Performance and Conduct Regulations 2008.
