Who Should Attend?

Operational Activities is aimed at all sergeants and inspectors. It may also be suitable for constables and police staff with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module entry requirements

Completion of the CLDP Being a Leader module or similar learning is a suggested pre-requisite to undertaking this module.

This module is available in Workbook or e-Workbook and Workshop format for licensed forces. For further details please contact your force training department.

Course / Module duration

5 - 8 hours self-directed learning. This may be followed by a 2 - 5 day in-force Operational Policing Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Methods of delivery

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified learning need.

Assessment process / accreditation details

As an awarding body of the Chartered Management Institute completion of this module can also contribute towards:

  • Level 3 - Diploma in First Line Management and Leadership
  • Level 5 - Diploma in Management and Leadership.

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

Operational Activities is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by police personnel to plan and manage operational activities.

Aims

It focuses on three areas:

  • The principles of managing operational activities and how to set objectives
  • Planning and managing operational activities: planning, contingency planning, maintaining control and the impact of child protection on operations
  • Communication: briefing, handing over and debriefing.

Objectives

Operational Activities will assist learners to:

  • Detail the principles of operations management
  • Describe how to formulate objectives
  • Identify the factors that influence how to achieve objectives
  • Detail the factors to be taken into account when planning a response
  • Explain methods for contingency planning
  • Identify methods for managing operations efficiently and effectively
  • Explain the recommendations of the Laming report and their impact on operations
  • Describe methods for briefing staff
  • Describe methods for ensuring effective handovers
  • Explain how to debrief staff in ways that contribute to staff motivation and development
