Who Should Attend?

Approaches to Crime Reduction is aimed at all sergeants and inspectors. It may also be suitable for constables and police staff with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module entry requirements

Completion of the CLDP Being a Leader module or similar learning is a suggested pre-requisite to undertaking this module.

This module is available in Workbook or e-Workbook and Workshop format for licensed forces. For further details please contact your force training department.

Course / Module duration

5 - 6 hours self-directed learning. This may be followed by a 2 - 5 day in-force Operational Policing Workshop for those with an identified training need.

Methods of delivery

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified learning need.

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

Approaches to Crime Reduction is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by police personnel to reduce crime.

Aims

It focuses on three areas:

  • The principles of crime reduction
  • Intelligence and analysis
  • Approaches: problem oriented policing and zero tolerance policing.

Objectives

Approaches to Crime Reduction will assist learners to:

  • Explain the concepts and principles underpinning the crime reduction approach to policing
  • Describe the partnership requirements of the Crime and Disorder Act and the benefits of working with other agencies
  • Describe the justice gap and methods for narrowing it
  • Explain how an analysis of local crime patterns can be used to support integrated policing responses and reduce crime
  • Explain how to use intelligence led approaches to manage crime
  • Explain the principles and components of the National Intelligence model (NIM)
  • Explain the principles of problem oriented policing and how to put it into practice
  • Explain the principles of zero tolerance policing and how it relates to crime reduction.
