Financial Management is aimed at inspectors and second line managers. It may also be suitable for anyone else with a role-related requirement.

Course / Module duration

5 - 6 hours self-directed learning. This may be followed by a 1 - 2 day in-force Financial Management Workshop for those with an identified training need.

This module will be delivered through a combination of a Workbook or e-learning Workbook with an additional Workshop for those with an identified learning need.

Assessment process / accreditation details

As an awarding body of the Chartered Management Institute completion of this module can also contribute towards:

  • Level 5 - Diploma in Management and Leadership

Cost to HO Forces

There is no direct charge for participants from licensed funded forces.

Cost to non HO Forces

Non-Home Office funded and other forces/organisations will be charged as laid out in the licensing agreement on a force-by-force basis.

Overview

Financial Management is about the leadership skills and knowledge needed by managers to manage finance.

Aims

This module focuses on two areas:

  • The context of financial management: key components, terminology and frameworks
  • Financial management in context: budgeting, planning and control, managing expenditure and frameworks for income generation, sponsorship and service contracts.

Objectives

Financial Management will assist learners to:

  • Explain the key components and terminology of police funding
  • Describe the key principles, features and implications of Best Value
  • Explain different types of budgets and their advantages and disadvantages
  • Explain how financial factors impact on operational planning and control
  • Describe the components of effective budgetary control systems
  • Identify effective approaches to local financial management
  • Explain systems for classifying costs and capital budgeting
  • Explain revenue budgeting
  • Identify the causes of expenditure variance and how it impacts on planned activities
  • Describe effective frameworks for income generation, sponsorship and service contracts.
