Designing Out Crime

Who Should Attend?


The module is suitable for crime prevention design advisers / architectural liaison officers. It is offered to partners from other agencies.

Course / Module entry requirements


Learners should have successfully completed the Crime Prevention Learning & Development Programme modules: Introduction to Crime Prevention, Security Products (e-learning), Site Surveying and Multi-Agency Problem Solving; or the
Crime Prevention Programme; or the Standard Crime Reduction Programme at least six months before attending the Designing out Crime module.

Alternatively, learners must have attended a certificated equivalent or provide accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL).

A pre-requisite of attendance on all CPLDP modules is completion of the Diversity and the Police e-learning package.

Course / Module duration

The module is in 3 phases:   - preliminary learning (at least 22 hours) - classroom based learning (ten days) - workplace learning and assessment (at least 20 hours)  

Methods of delivery

Blended learning: classroom / e-learning / workbased / self-study.

Assessment process / accreditation details

A series of activities will test the learner's understanding and ability to apply learning in the workplace.

Overview


The module explores the concept of designing out crime, particularly in the built environment. It covers:

  • crime prevention through environmental design;
  • the role of the crime prevention design adviser;
  • interpretation of plans and drawings;
  • planning law and planning procedures;
  • community safety implications.

Aims


The programme will equip individuals with the skills and knowledge to apply and understand designing out crime techniques to develop safer communities.

Objectives


By the end of the programme learners will be able to:

  • explain and evaluate the principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED);
  • outline ways in which the key concepts of CPTED can be applied to the planned or built environment ;
  • explain the role of the Crime Prevention Design Advisor (CPDA) in designing out crime;
  • outline ways in which specific planning law, procedures and other relevant legislation relate to the role of the CPDA;
  • demonstrate how the CPDA can work effectively with other relevant partners in applying the principles of Crime Prevention to the design of the built environment.
