Uniform Operational Training

Enables students to plan the policing of an operation in accordance with ACPO policy, good practice and cost recovery in a framework of risk assessment. Targeted at police and support staff who are, or are soon to be, working in operational planning.

Public Order Command

In the current political climate, and in light of forthcoming major events such as the 2012 Olympics and the G8 summit, it is imperative that officers involved in public order command are fully prepared with the correct knowledge, skills, understanding, attitude and behaviour to operate effectively.

Initial Public Order Command

Is aimed to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills attitude and behaviour in officers relating to the Public Order Command Structure, strategy and tactics pertinent to their specific roles in order to perfom the role of Bronze Commander at a preplanned or spontaneous Public Order event.

Advanced Public Order Command

hydra suite with operativeIs aimed at Commanders who have achieved IPOC competencies, who may have shadowed or supported the role of silver or gold commanders, and those who have carried out out these roles at events where they have applied principles of Keeping the Peace.

It is a competency based framework of learning and assessment which has been produced following the major community disturbances of 2001, building upon the many subsequent debriefs, local studies and government reviews.

This programme is intended to help develop an understanding of the public order command structure, and to enable the candidate to effectively command both spontaneous and preplanned events, including planning, partnerships, developing strategies and reviewing the outcomes of such events.

It aims to develop the necessary skills in officers, relating to the Public Order command structure, strategy and tactics pertinent to specific roles, in order to perform the role of Police Commander at a pre-planned or spontaneous Public Order event. See course sheet.

Operational Planning

Aims to enable students to plan the policing of an operation in accordance with ACPO policy, good practice and cost recovery in a framework of risk assessment. It is targeted at police support staff, police constables to inspectors who are, or are soon to be, working in operational planning.

Civil Contingencies

Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Foundation

ACPO highlighted a need for standardisation of the initial DVI training that police forces receive thereby increasing effectiveness and reducing the risk of mistakes in the identification process. NPIA have therefore developed training to ensure officers can competently execute important DVI and emergency mortuary duties necessary for body recovery and identification at a major incident or disaster. Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Advanced


The University of Dundee were commissioned by ACPO to develop and run an Advanced DVI product for the national cadre of 500 DVI Commanders. A five day course with assessed pre learning via the University's Virtual Learning Environment It also incorporates practical elements and an end of course dissertation.

Major Incident Training


Emergency Procedures for Major Incidents comprises two modules: one for Initial Responders and one for Tactical Command which are available on the NCALT Managed Learning Environment (MLE) from July 2009. These were launched at the ACPO EP Conference this year and reflect the current ACPO Guidance.
