PCSOs & Special Constables

Neighbourhood Policing allows police, partners and the public to work together to solve the problems of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. The aim is to improve neighbourhood conditions and feelings of security and safety.

The  Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) led Neighbourhood Policing Programme was launched in April 2005 and is underpinned by two government promises:

  • to embed a neighbourhood policing team in every neighbourhood by 2008
  • to recruit 16,000 Community Support Officers by 2007

We are working closely with ACPO across a number of areas to support this initiative. Training programmes include an updated national learning & development package for Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's) together with the introduction of a national recruitment programme aimed at supporting the recruitment of PCSO's and Specials to a national standard. (APA)

The role of PCSO's was developed over the last few years with a view to increasing visibility of policing. They will support the work of local police forces and provide a visible and reassuring presence on the streets.

The PCSO curriculum draws on the Initial Police Learning and Development Programme (IPLDP) - a nationally  designed programme to support forces in the training of student officers - and includes facilitated group discussions, case studies, role play and guest speakers, as well as flexible e-learning options.
