In January 2011, Nick Gargan took on the role of Chief Executive at the NPIA. Nick joined the agency in January 2010 as Deputy Chief Executive. He was previously the Assistant Chief Constable for Crime and Criminal Justice at Thames Valley Police where he worked since 2006.

Prior to this, he was a Chief Superintendent with Leicestershire Constabulary where he had served since joining the police service in 1988.  During his time at Leicestershire Constabulary, he worked as a Basic Command Unit Commander for Leicestershire's East Area. Before that, he was a Detective Superintendent in charge of the constabulary's specialist crime squads. His career also includes a three year secondment to the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS) based in London and Paris.

He is the Association of Chief Police Officers' (ACPO) spokesman for intelligence and an active member of ACPO's Crime Business Area.
