Core Leadership Development

This programme develops leadership skills preparing people for promotion to the next level of management.  It is suitable for post-probationary constables acting and existing sergeants, inspectors and police staff members at corresponding grades.

Overview

The Core Leadership Programme is centred upon applying leadership theory in the workplace in order to deliver improved team and individual performance resulting in increased public satisfaction and confidence in policing.

The emphasis is on helping individuals to gain the personal and professional development of leadership and management skills, whether they are managing a couple of staff, a team, or larger groups of people.

The goal of the CLP is to improve individual's performance and their ability to provide a better service, both internally and for the communities being served.

How has this course changed?

CLP is currently undergoing a full review and re-write with the initial material to be rolled out from April 2010. The programme has been revised following extensive stakeholder consultation and is supported by the National Product Reference Group. It has also been written in conjunction with members of various Police Forces and has taken the best practice available from the service.

This programme is available across two levels:

  • Firstline Supervisors - Sergeants Level 3 Management Qualification
  • Middle Managers - Inspectors Level 5 Management Qualification

Why should I join this programme?

CLP encourages the shift towards transformational leadership in the Police Service to make it a more people focused organisation.  It allows the development of skills and abilities based on needs, rather than upon your rank or role within the organisation and offers continuous professional development.

For those seeking progression, it will help them prepare for their new role, reducing the stresses and 'sink or swim' feeling often associated with role change.

The programme offers blended learning through self managed study guides using multimedia learning tools available via the NCALT Managed Learning Environment.

Depending on your Force's position on obtaining accredited management qualifications, participation can lead to a level 3 or 5 qualification with the Chartered Management Institute.

How is the programme delivered?

The use of private study and IT solutions enables this programme to be accessed within the home or the workplace of the participant which does not create a barrier to participation for part-time staff and those with caring responsibilities.   The amount of tutor led training events is completely at the discretion of the Force.

Owing to the large numbers of potential and substantive first line supervisors and middle managers across England, Wales, PSNI and other non-Home Office Forces, your own force training teams are licensed to deliver the programme as appropriate to their individual policing context.

Please contact your own training departments to find out how you can participate in this development programme.
