Executive Development Programme

This programme provides development opportunities for members of ACPO/ (S) who hold the most demanding jobs in the service.

After an extensive consultation programme the National College of Police Leadership has developed a new programme aimed to provide executive development opportunities to the most senior leaders in the service.

How has the programme changed?

The programme has been designed to maximise flexibility of delivery options and is cognisant of different learning styles. Only members of the executive within policing are eligible to attend and the programme is open to those who have successfully completed the Strategic Command Course.

Why should I enrol on this programme?

A variety of options will be available to confidentially explore lessons from critical policing issues and improve personal skills that can assist in creating a more cohesive talent management approach to people management.

The programme is designed to be both an enabler for the development of new members of the executive as well as an opportunity for current and more experienced members of the executive to challenge their own thinking within specific topic areas. The vast experience of policing within the executive will be harnessed in order to maximise the learning for policing.

Those considering further promotion within policing may seek to use this programme as an opportunity to explore the 'step-up' issues for executives as well as an opportunity to review the current and future issues facing the service.

Your tutors will vary across the events, but the Executive Programme Designer is Dr Mark Kilgallon and Linda Mellors is the Executive Development Business and Project Manager.

How is this programme delivered?

There are a number of learning opportunities:

  • Seminars to develop critical knowledge
  • Mentoring programmes in partnership with the CIPD to qualify participants in professional mentoring
  • Small learning events exploring critical issues within policing to be held in partnership with both the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford
  • Reflective learning sets organised on a regional basis and
  • Master Classes where strategic exercises will be provided to help consolidate learning.

The core modules make reference to the 'domains' from the NPIA Leadership Strategy and provide the core knowledge for participants to further develop within their roles. There will be pre-learning material available to participants in order to maximise the opportunities during the learning events.

It is anticipated that each module will last no more than two days - with seminars being restricted to one day events.
