Exempton of Attendance Route

Completion of the 'Core Skills and Values' module is a pre-requisite for all subsequent PTRLDP modules. A formal exemption of attendance route is available to experienced candidates who can demonstrate that they are competent in the module outcomes.

The exemption process is managed by the NPIA Trainer Development exemption panel and requires completion of a competency based application form by the candidate. Please download application form from the downloads box on the right of the screen.

In addition, completion of the 'Enabling Learning in Practice' module outcomes is a pre-requisite of attendance for the following modules:

  • Design and Delivery in Practice
  • Coaching, Mentoring, Demonstration and Instruction
  • Evaluating Learning
  • Advanced Delivery Skills
  • Assessing Learning.

Please note the exemption of attendance of the 'Enabling Learning in Practice' module is a local decision and does not require the formal approval of the NPIA exemption panel.

How to make a successful exemption application

Here are some top tips for completing exemption applications:

  • The clues are in the questions you are asked to answer - following each question a further explanation is given and supplementary questions to guide your response. Read these carefully and ensure you have answered each one.
  • A certificate alone does not make an exemption application - the application is about evidencing your current competence and how you demonstrate the values that underpin professional practice in your role. A qualification alone is therefore insufficient.
  • Answer all the questions equally - the five questions in part 2 are individually scored. If you do not answer you do not get a score. The overall score is taken into account, but if you score too low on more than 2 questions your application will be rejected.
  • Speak for the 'I' - in explaining your answers outline your specific involvement rather than telling us about the project or training event itself. What did you do? What was your involvement?
  • Give recent examples - support your application by giving examples of current competence. Examples should be within the past 12 months from the date of the application.
  • Assume the assessors know nothing - treat the assessors as though they do not know anything about your role or job. Even if we know what you do or the activities you are involved in, if it is not written down then it cannot be scored.  Explain your answers and make full use of the 300 words you are allowed; we do not require huge portfolios of evidence, but equally we do not want bullet point answers.
  • Line managers are required to sign the application to confirm the information and evidence presented is authentic and that you possess the qualification(s) you have cited.
