Strategic Leadership
The programme provides opportunities for self directed personal and professional development in a supportive team environment. Participants, staff and speakers work together as equals, each bringing their knowledge, skills and experience to deal with the most difficult issues facing law enforcement globally. Professional collaboration extends far beyond the time confines of the programme as graduates develop extensive networks around the world and continue to support one another in the challenges that face their communities. The programme is based at Bramshill, but involves extensive research in English Police Forces. Study visits include trips to Northern Ireland and the Interpol Secretariat in Lyon, France. On successful completion of this programme you will be awarded the Executive Diploma in Strategic Management from the Chartered Management Institute, the professional body for managers and management development. Who can attend?
You will be a member of a chief officer team or identified as having the potential for promotion to a chief officer team. You should be capable of working at postgraduate level and be proficient in oral and written English - equivalent to a band of 6.5 overall on the English Language Testing Service (ELTS) or a score of 580 on the Princeton Test of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

| Module 1 - Leadership, Strategy, Partnerships and Performance | An analysis of the principals and practice of executive leadership and guidance in decision-making, planning and managing change at Chief Officer Level. This module includes an analysis of international best practice regarding police partnership work with other government, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, and work with local communities. |
| Module 2 - Transnational Organised Crime | A detailed examination of organised crime as a business, involving presentations by international experts and guided research projects. Each participant writes a strategy to combat organised and transnational crime for their own service. |
| Module 3 - Strategic Command | An in-depth review of the operational command responsibilities of Chief Officers, including workshops on counter-terrorism, major crime investigation and the management of critical incidents. |
Personal Planning
You should bring to the programme a strategic research project, commissioned by your chief officer, and an assessment of the extent to which your country is affected by organised crime.
Teaching Methodology
You will work with highly qualified speakers exploring critical policing issues, developing innovative and effective strategies to deal with the issues.
Your learning will be self-directed and recorded in a professional development plan which will record your development as measured against the UK chief officer competencies. You will begin your professional development plan before you commence the course, and update it at the end of each module.
We will provide you with professional, ethical and effective ways of analysing and addressing problems so that you can find your own answers as individuals and a team.
Your course colleagues share similar professional backgrounds. Together, you will share skills, knowledge and experience to analyse and resolve issues raised in the programme.
Programme staff will act as your personal coaches to ensure the learning is tailored to specific needs. You will have access to the National Police Library, the national centre for policing excellence, and police experts across the UK.
The assessment process
You will make honest and informed assessments of your competencies as a chief officer, and your potential for future development.
Your Professional Development Plan will provide a detailed record of your achievements and progress. Your organised crime strategy and strategic research project report will act as evidence of your achievements.
Programme staff will provide a final report for your Chief Officer which will assess your development in terms of UK chief officer competencies.
Residential students can expect the following:
- En-suite accommodation with telephones and data points
- Transport to and from airport
- Laptop computers supplied for duration of course
- Free membership of on-site leisure facilities
- On-site dining facilities and two licensed bars
- Programme of social events including cultural visits (for example, Oxford, Cambridge and Windsor)
- General store, laundry facilities and dry-cleaning arrangements
- Formal final dinner
The venue
The ISLP is delivered at Bramshill, 40 miles west of London. Set in 275 acres of beautiful Hampshire countryside, the site is built around a 16th-century mansion, alongside which are first-class modern facilities such as an on-site gym and extensive national library.
