Code of Practice

These are commissioned by the Home Secretary under the Police Reform Act. Once adopted, Codes of Practice have legal status which require chief officers to have regard for the code, thereby making them legally accountable.

Once completed, Codes of Practice are signed off by the relevant ACPO business area and ACPO Cabinet and will usually be accompanied by an NPIA Assisted Implementation plan.

The Management of Police Information 2005
  • Assists the police in carrying out their duty to obtain and use a wide variety of information (including personal information) in order to carry out their responsibilities
  • Aims to ensure that there is broad consistency between forces in the way information is managed within the law
  • Ensures effective use of available information within and between individual police forces and other agencies, to provide fair treatment to the public

  • PNC records cover many business areas, some of which relate to the start and end of processes for recordable offences. It is these areas that are the subject of this code

Police National Database 2010 
  • Promotes the lawful and consistent use of the PND and the information obtained from it
  • Ensures that chief officers adopt practices for the use of the PND and the information obtained from it in order that such information is used effectively for policing purposes
  • Ensures that the operation of the PND complies with data protection and human rights legislation
  • Ensures that the PND is not used in a way which is discriminatory or otherwise unfair to anyone based on their age, race, ethnicity, any faith or belief, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any disability
