Through this programme students are able to study for a Postgraduate Certificate (PGC), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and a Masters Degree (MSc).

These qualifications are unique in that there has never previously been a formal qualification for police staff involved in the field of cybercrime forensics - from the initial crime scene examination and recovery of data, to its analysis and the investigation of the actual crime.

Aims of the Programme

The MSc has been designed to equip students with the skill sets to assist in the investigation of a crime scene which involves the use of IT equipment and acquaint them with the legal, ethical and professional considerations that must be taken into account.  This masters level postgraduate qualification builds on the NPIA run training courses completed by the students as part of their normal professional development process.

Duration

The programme is studied on a part-time basis and can take between 3-6 years to complete, depending on the individual student.

Structure

These courses are delivered at one of  NPIA's location.

Students combine mandatory and selected courses from a programme of  units to obtain the required credits as shown:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits)
  • MSc 180 (credits).

Part-time students will typically undertake the components necessary for the Diploma over four terms. Those wishing to continue to an MSc will undertake the research skills and individual project components over a further two terms.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will typically be at degree level or equivalent. The degree must be an honours degree, second-class or higher, or its equivalent. It is anticipated that many students on the course will be officers with a number of years practical experience who will be able to demonstrate comparable experience.
