Regional Advisors

Have a broad experience in the field of serious crime investigation as Senior Investigating Officers.  They can, at the SIOs request, offer strategic advice and practical support to investigators of serious and series crimes and other complex enquiries including cross-border and high profile cases.

Where appropriate the Regional Advisor will formulate a Regional Support Team of the experts required by the investigation possibly including:

  • Crime Investigation Support Officer (CISO)
  • National Search Advisor  
  • National Interview Advisor
  • National Family Liaison Advisor
  • Behavioural Investigative Advisor
  • Geographic Profiler

In addition, Regional Advisors and support teams can access the full range of products and services on behalf of SIOs with the Physical Evidence Unit and the National Injuries Database (NID) as well as the Serious Crime Analysis Section (SCAS).  Forensic Specialist Advisors, NID analysts and SCAS analysts will often be part of the deployed Regional Support Team.

It is important to note that most of this service is free of charge but is only available on request - SIOs will be advised when charges may apply.  Regional Advisors will not be automatically notified of serious crime investigations in their area, therefore, from the earliest stages of the investigation, the SIO should consider consulting with the Operations Centre to draw upon any relevant experience and expertise.

Crime Investigation Support Officers (CISOs):

Are Detective Sergeants who have a wealth of experience in serious crime investigation.  They are the linchpin for tactical advice and guidance with knowledge of and access to the whole range of NPIA support services and products.

They are exposed to many enquiries across their regions and can provide innovative solutions to investigative problems utilising cutting-edge techniques that have proved to be effective in other investigations.

They also provide out of hours access to the crimedesk database of expertise and experience, as well as being available to offer initial tactical advice, making the NPIA Crime Operational Support service a 24/7 resource.

All of the CISOs have portfolio responsibilities in appropriate subjects relevant to the post and this extends the suite of available advice.
