Behavioural Investigative Advisors

The role of a Behavioural Investigative Advisor is to provide investigative support and advice that links the theoretical basis of behavioural science to the investigation of serious crime.

This advice may take many forms and includes:

  • Crime scene assessment
  • Motivational factors
  • Cold case reviews
  • Series Identification/Case Linkage
  • Risk assessment
  • DNA screening suspect prioritisation
  • Interview strategy
  • Offender background characteristics
  • Investigative suggestions/strategies.

Support is provided at the request of the Senior Investigating Officer.  The BIA will, usually in conjunction with a CISO, attend the relevant crime scenes, receive a briefing from the SIO, request and collate all relevant case materials, including victim and witness statements, crime scene photographs, pathology report, pathology photographs, relevant intelligence, etc.

Reports are then submitted to the SIO in accordance with agreed terms of reference, detailing the advice sought and the time scale for delivery. These are based on analysis of relevant databases, academic research, investigative experience, consultation with further experts, and any other relevant source.  The services of a consultant Clinical Psychologist are also available.
