Physical Evidence Section

Services from the Physical Evidence Section are available to SIOs, as required, via Regional Advisors.  The main aim is to improve the effectiveness and scope of the use of physical evidence in support of serious crime investigations within the UK.

The section is divided into two distinct areas covering physical evidence support and the National Injuries Database.

Physical Evidence Support

Can provide and co-ordinate specialist forensic advice to live major crime investigations or reopened 'cold cases'. This can be achieved in one of two ways:

Specialist Adviser (SA)

We have an arrangement with forensic providers to provide a free eight hour Specialist Adviser to assist in the development of forensic strategy in major crime investigations. This will include an overview of all physical evidence issues including the identification of forensic opportunities, potential outcomes and possible future lines of enquiry.

Ideally this support should be sought at the earliest opportunity in order to ensure that the SA comes into the enquiry as part of the NPIA support team and can influence early actions including issues relating to the crime scene.

Head of Physical Evidence

Is a senior forensic scientist who can provide an independent overview of all physical evidence issues. This is often useful in enquiries that have reached the review stage and may, therefore, have already utilised the services of an SA.

They can also provide or co-ordinate the provision of scientific advice across a broad range of forensic science disciplines. This will include advice relating to volume crime as well as major crime.

Good Practice

We also have a function to develop, collate and document best practice in all areas of policing. All such work relating to forensic issues is channeled through the PES.

Good practice within the physical evidence arena will be developed and peer reviewed through the ACPO Forensic Science portfolio sub-groups and will ultimately be published on the NPIA Genesis website.  This website has been developed for 'police eyes only' and is available through the Criminal Justice Extranet.
