Overview


The course utilises a variety of teaching methods including theory and practical elements. The practical exercise, based on a case study, will be used to consolidate learning and put theory into practice.

Aims


The aim of this module is to provide Basic Command Unit (BCU) senior managers (including police staff) with the appropriate knowledge and operational understanding of intelligence, and in particular the National Intelligence Model (NIM) business process.

Objectives


By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of intelligence led policing, the rationale, and the benefits of embedding it in the workplace
  • Highlight the importance of Risk Management within the NIM business process
  • Describe the role of the BCU/Senior Manager and strategic partners within the NIM and outline the responsibilities they will be expected to assume
  • Provide an overview of the NIM and the ACPO Minimum Standards requirements
  • Describe the strategic assessment and its place with the NIM
  • Describe the role of the senior management team in the identification, production and implementation of the strategic control strategy and intelligence requirement at Level 1
  • Describe the role of the analyst within an intelligence unit and examine how the analytical techniques are used to develop the four key intelligence products
  • Identify other roles (in addition to the BCU manager) and meetings involved in the Tasking & Co-ordinating process within the NIM
  • Describe the strategic and tactical tasking and co-ordination processes
  • Describe the purpose and content of a tactical assessment
  • Demonstrate how the national briefing model is used and how its fits into the NIM
  • Identify the issues affecting an intelligence led organisation in a performance driven culture
