Working closely with other government departments within the Home Office and beyond, we are advising on biometric issues and ensuring the police requirements are taken into account when procuring new systems/services. We represent NPIA on a number of standards bodies to ensure that UK police requirements are taken into account, including: Following the closure of the FIND (Facial Image National Database) project on the 31st March 2008, the Biometrics team now maintains: This standard has been adopted by the European Community and UK Police forces. Any enquiries please contact Head of Biometrics Geoff Whitaker on 0208 358 5580. The team maintains an active programme of academic collaboration working with universities throughout the UK to support the research into automated methods of human identification. We maintain a biometric demonstration lab, with regular visitors from the police service and government agency to see the latest biometric technologies We also maintain the Technology Roadmap which takes a strategic view of the next 15 years, looking at current and future capabilities of a variety of biometric and related technologies. This document provides a valuable tool in the planning process, helping to inform a variety of other strategic documents. It is also of value to both academic researchers and industry, highlighting the possible future applications for biometrics in policing and the wider CJS. Click here to view the Biometrics Team Work Chart for more information Currently, the majority of our efforts are concerned with automated facial recognition. A number of products (2D and 3D based) are on display in the biometrics demonstration facility at New King's Beam House and a FR (Face Recognition) technical report on the state of the market and current technology is available. This aims to inform stakeholders and assist our stakeholders in drawing up a Strategic Business case for face recognition.
