Police National Database

"The Police National Database matters to anyone who cares about making our society a more secure place for everyone." Sir Michael Bichard, April 2008

The Police National Database (PND) is the key deliverable of the IMPACT Programme in response to the Bichard Inquiry for a 'national IT system for England and Wales to support police intelligence'.

Currently, police forces are unable to access intelligence or other information held on another force's local systems. The PND offers a new capability for the Police Service to share, access and search local information electronically, thereby helping the police stay one step ahead of the criminal population.

It will provide forces with immediate access to up-to-date information from across the Service, overcoming artificial geographical and jurisdictional boundaries. Ultimately, the PND should increase operational effectiveness and decrease risk, helping to make society a safer place.

The PND will replace the IMPACT Nominal Index.

The NPIA has awarded the contract for the design, build, delivery and operation of the PND to a consortium led by Logica, following a rigorous competitive procurement process. For further information on contract please read the full PND Contract Award Press Release.

It will be delivered in a phased approach to allow benefits to be realised as early as possible. It is anticipated that deployment of Phase 1 will be underway in 2010, at this stage it will run in parallel with the Police National Computer.
