Our staff are our most valuable resource and therefore I regard modernising the way they are led, rewarded, deployed and developed as crucial to improving our success in reducing crime and making the country safer.

Workforce Modernisation

The National Workforce Modernisation Programme generates ideas, methods and tools to help the police service improve performance and deliver value for money.

Currently, we are working with thirteen police forces, known as 'demonstration sites'.  These forces are testing ways of working aimed at increasing their capacity and capability. Image Police officer with a working dag

After reviewing business processes the demonstration sites will look at how they match skills to tasks.  This work will be evaluated and made available as examples of good practice.  Where benefits are identified, improvements can be introduced to maximise police effectiveness.

Interim Evaluation Report

An interim evaluation report on the demonstration sites has been completed by  independent evaluators (Deloitte), commissioned by the Home Office.

As recommended in Sir Ronnie Flanagan's Review of Policing, the results of the evaluation have been published in order to share valuable learning with the service ahead of a final report which will be completed in early 2010. Download report.

  • Improved results through policing

What it brings for the police:

  • Improved support from their team
  • Increased career opportunities
  • Chance to specialise
  • Wider scope of work
  • New career opportunities
