Professional Practice

NIM is the core business model for policing however there are many other manuals of guidance and practice advice which need to be considered. NPIA have produced the following NIM related products:

  • ACPO (2008) Practice Advice on Analysis
    Analysis is an important tool for policing. It is used to understand crime and disorder issues, to investigate criminal incidents and to support the development of knowledge in increasingly diverse specialist areas. The purpose is to develop an understanding of issues in order to prioritise them and inform problem solving responses.
  • ACPO (2008) Practice Advice on the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) (Restricted)
    This practice advice explains how NABIS works and the actions forces can take to maximise the intelligence opportunities from all gun crime incidents. It also provides an introdcution to firearms forensics to help readers better understand the intelligence available to them.  
  • ACPO (2007) Practice Advice on Resources and the People Assets on the NIM
    This document provides advice about the functions of intelligence units, the roles of the people that work within them and the structure of the units in which they work. 
  • ACPO (2007) Practice Advice on the Introduction to Intelligence Led Policing
    This practice advice assumes no previous knowledge or experience of intelligence led policing. It is designed as a quick reference guide for staff who are not intelligence specialists, but require an understanding of intelligence led policing processes as part of their day to day duties.
  • ACPO (2006) Guidance on National Briefing Model
    Staff briefing and debriefing is essential to successful operational deployment. The NBM outlines the recommended processes to ensure effective briefing and debriefing.
  • ACPO (2006) Practice Advice on Tasking and Co-ordination
    This document provides advice on tasking and co-ordination at the BCU level of NIM operations. It focuses on tasking and co-ordination including: intelligence products, strategic and tactical tasking and co-ordination groups, tactical resolution and operational review. It provides detailed advice and describes effective practice for the successful tasking and co-ordination within the BCU.
  • ACPO (2006) Guidance on the Management of Police Information (MOPI)
    This guidance follows the Code of Practice on the MOPI developed by the Home Secretary, under the Police Act 1996. It is designed to provide a common national framework for the management of police information and it highlights the importance of common standards in high risk areas of activity.
  • ACPO (2006) Practice Advice on Professionalising the Business of Neighbourhood Policing
    This updated and revised practice advice is intended to support forces, from ACPO level through to delivery level practitioners, in the continued development, implementation and integration of neighbourhood.
